Often times in moments of crisis, organizers and activists are told we have to think realistically and focus on smaller winnable goals. But this is exactly the time to imagine bigger, to dream unrealistically, and to fight to make that a lived reality. To do so, though, we must have imaginative spaces where we can practice together imagining different possibilities and outcomes, and where we can claim our right to the future.

Walidah Imarisha, co-editor of the anthology Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction Stories From Social Justice Movements, will share her perspective on holding on to imaginative spaces and visionary liberation in the midst of difficult times. Drawing from her experiences with Octavia’s Brood which has engaged organizers and activists to create visionary fiction to support our movements in building liberated futures, and exploring the history with science fiction and social change, Walidah will examples of workshops and writing prompts that can be used to continue collectively dreaming of liberation even as we are physically separated.
