So Turiya and I are teaching again winter term at PSU, our Race and Gender in Science Fiction Film. I'm also teaching a class on my own, Race and the History of Incarceration. You should spread the word to any possible or potential PSU students for both!

Race and the History of Incarceration
CRN 45633 BST 410
Tuesdays 5:30 - 9:10 pm
Instructor Walidah Imarisha

We will look at the history of incarceration in this country, through the lens of race and racism, starting with the beginnings of the prison system and police force and the connections between slavery and the Reconstruction period. We will come up through the years, focusing on prison as a means of social control for people of color and poor people, fromĀ  Civil Rights to Black Power to the Reagan era. We will end by exploring grassroots responses to the prison industrial complex, from hip hop to community-based alternatives, locally and globally.
